NEW YORK CITY SEES RECORD-BREAKING VISITATION FOR 2007
Robert Leiber, deputy mayor for economic development, and George Fertitta, CEO of NYC & Co., yesterday announced that an estimated 46 million people visited New York City in 2007, up from 43.8 million in 2006. This record-breaking number includes an estimated 8.5 million visitors from other countries, representing growth of nearly 20 percent of the total international market compared to 2006. A new high for domestic visits was also reached by New York City, with some 37.8 million visitors in 2007, up from 36.5 million in 2006.
The announcement was made at the new Manhattan Cruise Terminal on the occasion of the Cunard Royal Rendezvous, a historic meeting of Cunard's Queen Elizabeth 2, Queen Mary 2 and the new Queen Victoria. NYC & Co. announced that the city's new global TV spot "This is New York" will be shown in staterooms of all Cunard vessels arriving in New York.
Lieber also said that an estimated $28 billion was spent by visitors in 2007, nearly $3 billion more than in 2006, helped in part by the decline in value of the dollar compared to other currencies. He also said the city was well on its way to its goal of 50 million visitors by 2015. Among international visitors, new highs for visitation were reached among visitors from the U.K., Scandinavian countries, Italy, France, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Russia, India and China. The U.K., Canada and Germany have been identified as the city's top three markets. NYC & Co. added nine new international offices in 2007 for a total of 16 locations serving 22 countries. The past year also saw the launch of the tourist appreciation campaign "Just Ask the Locals," and the global communications campaign "This is New York."
